In January 2008, a special court in Mumbai sentenced 11 accused to life in prison for this inhumane and brutal act and the sentence was later upheld by the High Court.

After spending almost 15 years in prison, one of the criminals filed a petition for release in the Supreme Court, on which the court released the criminals on August 15, India's Independence Day this month.

The Supreme Court directed all the convicts to consider the pleas of the accused under the amnesty policy of 1992, following which the Gujarat government released all the 11 convicts.

On the release of the brutal criminals, Bilqis Bano, the victim, said in her statement that when I heard that 11 convicted criminals who destroyed my life by killing 14 family members including my 3-year-old daughter and gang-raping me were acquitted. When I went, I felt like the incident that happened 20 years ago was repeated on me.

Bilqis Bano said that there are no words to express her pain on this decision. I'm still in shock. I lost faith in the higher courts and the justice system. Am I still safe from these bullies?
